We recommend that once pregnant you limit your caffeine intake to 200mg or less each day. This is about equivalent to 1-2 small cups of coffee per day. Please beware that not all coffee is created equally, and that depending on the type and where it is made, different varieties may contain differing amounts of caffeine.
Caffeine is also found in soda, hot tea, sweetened/unsweetened tea, and in some medications. These will be labeled with the amount of caffeine on the nutritional or medication information on the product.
The medical studies regarding caffeine intake and pregnancy are not perfect, and more studies need to be performed. However, there seems to be a very small increase in miscarriage with larger amounts of caffeine intake. In addition, large caffeine intake can increase the risk of your baby not growing well, or being smaller than average. This is why, at this time, we recommend the above caffeine restrictions.
